Modern Portrait of Tiberius
The portrait head of a mature man is set on a serpentine, loricate torso. The portrait, made in a dark marble, is characterized by a thin mouth and by nasolabial folds that suggest the figure’s mature age, overall the face features recall the portraits of Tiberius. The rigid execution of the face strongly contrasts with the execution of the bust, which is flat and synthetic; its shininess clashes with the opaque and porous marble used for the head. The juxtaposition of marbles of different colors and qualities, and inconsistency in the rendering of the lorica also suggest that the piece was made in modern times.
