Bust of Plautilla

From the Giustiniani Collection comes this exceptional portrait of Fulvia Plautilla, equal in age with Caracalla and his wife in 202 AD. She was Augusta of the Roman Empire until 205 AD, the year in which her husband asked for divorce. Relegated to Lipari, Plautilla was assassinated in 212 AD. by order of Caracalla. The artworks that show her portrayed share the same features: oval face, curved forehead, large eyes, small mouth and chin, elements that make her look very youthful on the whole.
In the Torlonia portrait, integral with the bust, the young girl shows off a hairstyle with a flat braid that goes up the nape of her neck, crowned by a diadem.
