In 1876, Pietro Ercole Visconti, illustrious curator of the Torlonia Museum, published the first catalogue of the antiquities collected and carefully preserved by several generations of the Torlonia family, defining them in the foreword to his catalogue “an enormous treasure of erudition and art”.
