An invitation to dance

The coupling of Nymphs and Satyrs dates back to ancient times. In the universe of mythology, these creatures were often portrayed together, being both inhabitants of rivers, woods and springs, in a deep relationship with an uncontaminated and wild nature.

The Torlonia Satyr and Nymph feature together in the moment before the dance. The Satyr, gently bent forward, beats the tempo with the rhythmic sound of the kroupezion, an ancient percussion instrument that was tied under the foot and used to accompany the dance. The Nymph sits gracefully on a rock, on which she leans with her left hand while with her right hand she is intent on untying her sandal. The gesture anticipates her movement, about to get up and start to dance.
