Group of Aphrodite and Eros with Ketos

The goddess Aphrodite is depicted with a sea monster posing at her feet and an Eros playfully grasping a flap of the drapery that wraps the body of the goddess from her hips down to her feet. The face, characterized by soft and ideal features, is framed by a delicate wavy hairstyle, with the strands of hair tied on the top of the head and gathered into a bun at the nape. The sculptural group originally presented a different setting, the nineteenth-century restorations involved the replacement of the torso, the arm of the Eros and the head of the goddess that was inspired by a reworking of the Capitoline-Dresden type Aphrodite. The work, which was inspired by Hellenistic models, can be dated to the second century AD.
