Myth and Marble marks the first presentation of ancient Roman sculpture in the Kimbell’s history. The exhibition spans works created between the late fifth century BC and the early fourth century AD, with a focus on the High Imperial period. Visitors encounter gods, goddesses, mythological heroes, portraits of emperors, and magnificent funerary monuments, many newly conserved for this North American debut.
Thematic sections guide visitors through icons of the Collection, depictions of idealized bodies, imperial portraiture, the history of restoration, Torlonia family excavations, and Roman funerary traditions. Highlights include the celebrated Hestia Giustiniani, the Portrait of a Young Woman (Maiden of Vulci), and sarcophagi such as the Labors of Hercules.
As Jennifer Casler Price, curator of the exhibition for the Kimbell, observed: “Each of these exceptional sculptures has lived many lives over the centuries… Reaching across space and time, connecting the past with the present, these powerful works still resonate with us today.”
